The ten-day extinguishing contract is finally over at the waste plant in Tampere

The Pirkanmaa rescue service has left Tampere's Rusko waste treatment plant after a ten-day firefighting job. The last units left the waste facility on Thursday evening at 8 pm.

The emergency department left some equipment at the waste facility, for example fire hoses and pumps, which will probably be collected during Friday.

The control of the site is now the responsibility of the operator, Remeo.

Yle previously reported that the police have started a preliminary investigation into the operation of the waste facility.

The persistent fire was extinguished since Tuesday morning of last week. Dangerous smoke spread from the fire, and a danger bulletin was in effect in the area for several days.

Tomi-Pekka Olkkonen, the on-duty fire marshal of the situation center of Pirkanmaa's rescue service, commented to Yle on Thursday evening that it has been the busiest fire of his 25-year career.

"The game net is so high that not even a red deer can easily jump over it. An adequate number of wild animals is a basic condition for the natural forest regeneration process. If oak saplings are constantly missing, there is no possibility of renewal. These oak saplings will take over the role of old and middle-aged trees in the coming decades and ensure continuous forest cover," said Péter Szekeres.

Remeo has a long to-do list

On Thursday, Pirkanmaa's ely center ordered Remeo a long list of things that the company must do.

The Ely Center requires that the waste facility must be emptied and cleaned by the end of the year. The facility may not receive new waste.

In Rusko, you may only process waste for the purpose of transporting it away. All waste stored in the plant area, burned material and extinguishing wastewater must be delivered out of the area.

The Ely center also orders Remeo to investigate the environmental effects of the fire. The company must pay all costs related to environmental monitoring and sampling.

Remeo must clean the plant area and its surroundings. The cleaning also includes the collection of garbage spread on the sides of the roads from the transport of loads. Remeo is responsible for the cleaning costs.

The company must also deal with pest control in the area.

Remeo has been given until the end of the year to do the things that have now been decided. After that, the ely center checks the situation.

If things are not in order, the authority will consider further action.
